Weather Balloon Inflator

Our Weather Balloon Inflator allows you to inflate your weather balloon very easily. Working with unregulated high-pressure gas is very unsafe. Just cracking the valve open does not regulate pressure and can lead to serious injury. We therefore only sell weather balloon inflators with a brass gas regulator which reduces the helium tank pressure from up to 3,000 psi to just 80 psi to bring you the ultimate safety.

Our Weather Balloon Inflator also comes with a 2,000 gram launch scale so you can verify you have just the right amount of helium in your balloon to accomplish your mission before tying it off. The brass gas regulator will screw into any standard helium tank (CGA-580 fitting). The gas regulator includes a rubber O-ring seal which allows you to create a hand-tight seal without the need for any tools.

Here’s how we recommend filling your weather balloons:

  1.  Attach the inflation system to your helium gas cylinder, a hand tight seal will be more than adequate, as brutal force with a wrench could damage the seals.
  2. Insert the inflation system nozzle into your weather balloon’s neck. Do not unroll the weather balloon yet. It is much easier to work with the balloon’s neck when the balloon is still rolled up.
  3. Secure the weather balloon to the inflation system nozzle. Wrap both the neck of the balloon and the bottom of the inflation nozzle together with electrical tape.
  4. Unroll the balloon and prepare it for inflation. Before you start to inflate your weather balloon, have your helper hold the balloon loosely over their forearms.
  5. Slowly open the valve on your helium gas cylinder to begin inflating your balloon.
  6. Let the balloon lift itself out of your helpers forearms. Eventually the balloon will rise out of your helper’s arms. You can now start measuring your balloon’s lift.
  7. Inflate your balloon until it has the right amount of lift. When measuring your balloon’s lift, make sure there is slack in the inflation hose. You want all of the balloon’s lift to be pulling up on the scale, not the inflation hose. You want all of the balloon’s lift to be pulling up on the scale, not the inflation hose. Don’t forget to add the weight of the inflation nozzle to the reading on the scale. The inflation nozzle weighs 200 grams, so if your scale measures a lift of 800 grams, your balloon is actually generating 1,000 grams of lift (measurement on scale plus the weight of the inflation nozzle).
  8. Once your balloon has the right amount of lift, shut off the supply of helium.

Weather Balloon Chute Release

  • During the Descent of a High Altitude Balloon, the Parachute normally opens around 60,000 feet when there’s enough air in the atmosphere to open the parachute. Most payloads will drift to over 100 miles, and can take over an hour to descend. 
  • By using this Parachute Release it will save you from driving so far as the parachute is kept closed until the Chute Release opens.
  •  With this device you can now choose what altitude for the parachute to open on the go without programming, by simply pressing the buttons! This is the only device on the market which can do so.
  • Very simple to use, light weight, and the battery can lasts for multiple days in any weather.
  • Comes with detailed instructions, extra rubber bands, tethers and pins.
  • Compatible with any type of parachute.

*If you live near mountains, make sure to set the device high enough. For instance, if you live near a 3,000ft tall mountain, and you set the Chute Release for 4,000ft, the chute would deploy 1,000ft above the mountain, not 4,000ft.

4 Point Recovery Harness for HAB’s

  • These harnesses are made out of 860lb Braided Kevlar that is very light weight which makes it perfect for weather balloons.
  • There are 4 lines; each one is 5 feet long, which has a 1” loop on each end that is finger trapped and then sewn with Kevlar thread.
  • At the one end is a sewn in 1,500 pound swivel that would be attached to the parachute. On the other end are 4 open loops, which would be attached to your payload, usually with zip ties as their cheap yet strong.
